A young wolf pup peered carfully around the tree, her paws trembling and eyes darting everywhere. Gingerly, she stepped out from behind the tall oak. Ananya's tail twitched nervously as she began to walk. Her limping grew stronger with every step until she had to release and fall to her side. Her eyelids grew heavy and is took all Ananya's strength to keep them open. The blood was flowing like a tiny river out of the gash on her foreleg, and she knew she wouldn't last much longer without help....

The vegetation was lush and green to Kisha's eyes, a landscape to be proud of. Her massive blue-brindled wings twitched, the alpha frowned slightly. She cast about, glowing orbs scanning the exotic flora. It was stiflingly hot, as summers always were in the Mleenleg tribe, she supposed. But for the heavy blue-green boulders scattered throughout the tangle of undergrowth Kisha would be suffering heat stroke from her thick northern fur. Even with the life-giving shade sheltering her from the sun the temperatures were pushing her regulation to the edge.
Then, she stiffened. A metallic odor mixed in with the fragrance of lilies and gardenia. It was recognizable: Kisha shot up and plowed through her rainforest home. A blue patch of fur was visible through the thick, oily leaves of a passion flower plant. Kisha stripped away most of the small bush with a sweep of her paw, eyes widening slightly at the sight of a young puppy, who had fainted clear away.
No--Kisha saw the eyes flicker open slightly, saw that they were mismatched blue and green. She shadowed the small puppy's body with her own, feeling the increasing heat of the sun on her back. She looked up, blue eyes darting, then back down again, uncertainty on her face. She reached down after a moment, murmuring to the puppy.
I'm going to take you somewhere cooler. Can you tell me your name?

The blue-gray pup shifted to look up at the other wolf. In a quiet voice, she murmured, My name is Ananya Jouleyi. She tucked her paws under her and looked down at the ground, feeling very vulnerable.

Kisha nodded, memorizing the puppy's name. It was a mouthful, but very pretty. Very unique, the alpha thought; probably not from around the region. My name is Kisha, you don't need to be afraid. I'm the alpha here. She leaned down and, as gently as she could, grabbed the puppy by her scruff. Ananya was a bit big for this kind of carrying--luckily that wasn't what Kisha had in mind. Swinging around, she deposited the hurt child on her broad steel-furred back between the two wings. She smiled at her, hoping it carried up into her eyes. To see a puppy alone and wounded made her sick.

Ananya fell asleep atop the alpha's back. As she drifted into unconsciousness, her last thought was how thankful she was that there was another wolf here to help her.

Kisha smiled, a little quirking of her lips. As smoothly as she could, the alphess wolf walked around the blooming, thick plant life; rubbery leaves brushing her steely-gray sides. It was so green it almost hurt, but mercifully there were no bugs around that hot summer day. They were the real bother: sometimes Kisha wondered why she had chosen this land and not some other more temperate one.
She smiled to herself. That was easy to answer, the Mleenleg Tribe was a challenge because it was so unique. A tall blue-green rock loomed over the two; Kisha sidled around it into the shade.

Even though her eyes were closed, the light glowing through her eyelids grew darker. Her fur felt much cooler already, so she knew she was in the shade. Half jumping, half falling, she slid off the alpha's back and next to the big rock. Thank you, barked Ananya.

Kisha smiled, she was feeling very maternal for some reason. Puppies always woke up something in her, something solely primal and belonging to all female wolves. Never leave a child alone, especially one hurt. That was just instinct, actually. Kisha slid back onto her haunches, fur turned green by the light tnhrough the trees.
So . . . where are you from? She barked, tilting her dial generously.
