He had found it.
The poor, white wolf had been searching ever since they had gotten back to his old land, searching for his mate and pups. They were nowhere to be found- but he had been able to get ahold of his mate and daughter's scents, and had traced them back to here. By the falls, as he stood and felt the warm mist on his coat, the scent disappeared here. The last remaints of his family led him to the falls.
He stood up, looking over the cliffside that overhung above the giant waterfall, and thought back. Oh, the sweet, painful memories... Loosing his son and daughter, his one true love... Just then, the gem on his chest, a bright turqoise, began to glow. Fearfully, he looked down and cried out.
The gem had been dull for the past year or so, having lost its properties in his search for love. But now, at this site, when he had found out the sad, awful truth... it reversed, and he fell back into his cowardly state. Having lost his love, his offspring, and his home... Almost involuntarily, he reverted back to his cowardly state of mind and body. He sat down and cried, afraid and broken hearted. And he knew he would never be the same again.
---~~~---
Hakan had followed his brother's scent back to the falls until he came to the top, where the river sloped downwards and fell into a mighty waterfall. He looked upwads, and saw a small, white figure, collapsed on the rocky overhang, straight above the falls. Fearing the worst, he ran over to his brother and stood beside him.
He could tell that his brother wasn't physically hurt- but, with a gasp, he saw his brother's bright turqoise gem glowing. He collapsed inside, too- he knew his brother had lost his bravery, his soul, and his love. Leaning down, he softly nudged his brother's ivory snout. A whimper was all he got in response, and he nudged again.
Finally, Earh lifted his face, and looked at Hakan. On his face was written the saddest face Hakan had ever seen, and Hakan sighed.
"I'm sorry, my brother," Hakan whispered. "I truly am."
Earh whimpered and, struggling to get up, finally stood up on his four shaky legs. And when he spoke, Hakan noticed fearfully that it was his old, cowardly voice speaking, and not the confident, brave tone he had used during his search.
"I don't know if I can live here anymore, Hakan."
Hakan whimpered and nuzzled his brother lightly. "Sure we can," he said softly, with an encouraging smile. "I think we can. I think we can give it a darn good try, don't you?"
But Hakan did not get the response he wanted. Earh, instead, whimpered and lowered his head cowardly, his ears falling down. "I...I don't know Hakan," he whispered. "I'm scared."
Pained terribly, Hakan knew that Earh had reverted back to his cowardly state of mind- he was scared, and knew it. Hakan sighed. "Well, we're staying," he said, sadly having to revert back to HIS old, protective and authoritive over his brother state. "I've found a she-wolf while I was exploring, and she just gave birth to pups. It would be rude to just leave her here with no protection."
Earh nodded, barely hearing or understanding Hakan. But he was lost- lost in his old self and he didn't seem to care. He waited for Hakan to go, and he knew he would follow his brother to the ends of the world- for he was all this poor wolf had left.
