Like a dove, the fantastically white wolf swooped and dived above the still surface of the lake, half drowned in his pride of his own strength. A similar looking female flew in circles far above him, not wanting to interupt his showing off. Her earring jingled slightly as the breeze lifted her higher and she adjusted her legs to keep balanced. All of a sudden, the male shot into the water. A fountain of glittering spray shot up and the female descended to the bank. She make a swift landing and loped to the shore. Up popped a furry head, and between its fangs, a thrashing trout. The white wolf bit down, and the fish emitted a loud crunch. "Got one!" he barked with a huge smile, after lobbing the rather dead fish to his companion, who, with a small hop, caught it neatly in her jaws. She shook her head. "Then hurry up and dry off. This isn't our terra, you know!" she called back, turning to her fishy breakfast.

Nereus strolled to the lake for a drink, sniffing the air. He could have sworn he'd smelled wolf scent blowing past him about a minute ago, but now he couldn't scent anything because the wind had changed. Nereus emerged from the bushes at the edge of the lake and stopped, surprised but quickly hiding it. Here were the two wolves he had scented!

The male lifted his muzzle to the breeze and froze. He stared momentarily, before shooting off like a bullet from the water, high into the air, leaving only ripples behind. "Coward.." the female muttered, spotting a huge fish just below the surface. She began to devour the trout, savouring each and every bite.
High above, Zachery glared at the wolf beside the bushes. Hadn't Kirra scented him? Maybe she was upwind of him.. He gulped. 'I can't go down there now.. not after i fled like that..' he thought to himself, cirlcing like a vulture does over carrion, contemplating his choices..

<<ooc: switching to first person, hope you don't mind.>> [glow=blue,5,000]In a flurry of feathers, most partially wet, the male was gone into the air. He circled above me and the femme, glancing at her with an expression full of worry, then glaring at me. It was almost comical. I was sure the female hadn't noticed me yet, so it was time to introduce myself.
I turned toward the femme. Hello, I said, trying to sound friendly but dominant. I wasn't as new to being alpha as before, but I still had a lot to learn, partially from mistakes. I didn't want this to be one of them. I am Nereus, alpha of this land.
Anticipating her likely surprise at suddenly noticing me, I quickly added, You don't need to worry, I won't drive you off. But who are you, and your partner up there? I nodded toward the sky. He does well to be careful in these times, but you need not fear me unless you harm my pack. [/glow]

Kirra jumped at the voice that pierced the quiet. She stood up and licked her lips "Uh.." she gulped, not too sure what to say "I'm Kirra.. and that up there is my brother, Zachery. Sorry for intruding on your territory. We're wanderers and we spotted the lake as we were flying over." she remarked, quickly pulling herself together. Suddenly, there was a whistle of wind through wings and a light thud. The she-wolf reconised the sound as her brother landing a few metres behind her. He stood with his head low and tail high, proud and defensive as he'd always been; the reason the siblings had never been accepted into a pack.

[glow=blue,6,500]I nodded, knowing she had told me the truth. This was an ability I had had for a long time, I could just almost always tell if a wolf was telling the truth from the way they spoke, the way they moved. For me, I just took it for granted now.
I give you permission to hunt in my land if you so wish, I said to Kirra, then added to her brother, Both of you. He stood proudly, in a way that showed he would protect his sister no matter what. I admired that, and wasn't offended by his dominant manner, then quickly glancing them over. They both looked thinner than a pack wolf, but also like they had taken care of themselves well for loners.
I sat back and thought of the best way to invite them into my slowly growing pack. It would probably sound rude to just suddenly ask them, but I would love to have these strong, proud loners in my pack. Possibly one of them would ask, and then of course I would say yes, but what if they didn't? How could I invite them? [/glow]

A smile flooded onto Kirra's face. Never had she been given permission to hunt on pack grounds before. She blinked at Nereus and blushed. She was honoured.. He seemed nice, anyway. Thank you. Care to join us? she asked politely, lowering her tail and head in respect of this kind wolf. She padded down to the slightly muddy bank and took a sip of water. Meanwhile, Zach snarled under his breath. 'Why would an alpha let two lone wolves into his land?' he asked himself, folding back his wings but keeping his tail and head just as high as this Nereus fellow did. He stalked down to the water's edge and lay down, keen eyes spotting a dragonfly flittering over the soft ripples. Kirra gulped as her brother didn't back down. She turned to the alpha to see if he was going to join her in a game of fishing. ...Zachery would end up being trouble and she knew it.

I heard, just barely, how Zachery muttered, Why would an alpha let two lone wolves into his land? A twinge of annoyance ran across my face, then I quickly supressed it. I replied quietly, also under my breath so they were unlikely to hear, (although I kind of hoped they, or at least Zachery, would), Maybe because he's kind and wants to help out two wolves who, although have taken well care of themselves, still look like they hadn't had a decent meal for a long time until they came into his terra? Then I turned to Kirra and replied, shaking my head, I don't have time to fish, sorry. Then I turned around and walked to the bushes, at a pace just slow enough to hear if one of them said anything, but just fast enough so they wouldn't think I was lingering to hear them.

She looked at the white wolf in a mix of disgust and annoyance "You sure know how to piss people off, dont'cha?" she hissed, teeth bared and ears flat back. He merely stared blankly back at her, beautiful blue eyes glinting. She almost exploded in anger. "It's not normal for us to get accepted into a territory with decent hunting ground, and you have to screw it up! You do the same thing every time and I have to pay for it! The only reason I stay with you is because that way I don't get bossed around, no. Instead I have to put up with a spoilt brat of a dog!" She barked. Tears welled up in her eyes as she spun around and ran towards the bushes. She burst through the barrier of leaves and saw the alpha just in time to miss him. She skidded to a halt and just sank down. Her anger faded and she was no longer the strong she-wolf. She was nothing more than a pile of fur and bone. Her pink eyes drifted to his. "I'm sorry... We'll just go - we'll be a nuisanse otherwise." she breathed, gathering herself and walking slowly away, eyes dull and head low.

I'm sorry... We'll just go - we'll be a nuisanse otherwise, I heard Kirra say behind me and turned around. It's okay, I answered, looking at her as she walked dejectedly away. Just tell your brother to try not to offend alphas so much, others might not be so lenient as me. I sat down and waited for her to say something, whether it was while still walking away or she turned to face me.

She stopped in mid step and cleared her throat. "I doubt he'll stay. He can't bear to be told what to do." Kirra replied, turning her head to look at him. She broke out of her plain expression with a small smile "But I might.. If you wouldn't mind." She added, turning to face him. Zachery remained beside the water. He watched his reflection lick its lips as a fish dashed past. He scratched the side of his head with a hind leg and lay down, dark nose breathing minuscule ripples into the lake. Kirra's solemn words reached his sharp hearing and he drew his lips back in a silent growl. "She's right. I wont be staying." he muttered for only himself to hear, unfolding his wings to dry.

My eyes softened. I don't mind. If you want, you could just hunt here, or you could join the tribe if you want. I stood up, making very clear in my posture that even if she joined the tribe, I already had an alpha mate. Not that I din't like her, but I wouldn't ever break my unsaid promise to Wint. I nodded, then glanced past her to Zachery. I had heard him muttering something, but this time hadn't quite managed to pick it up.

Gathering himself, Zach spread his wings and caught a gust of wind, lifting swiftly into the air in the blink of an eye. He sang a short noise to Kirra, something between an effortless howl and a bark, then departed within moments. Kirra watched him disappear over the treetops, and carried on staring for a few seconds after he was gone. She blinked slowly and returned her gaze to Nereus. "I guess that's that then." She spoke softly, ears back in slight disappointment. Kirra had at least hoped for a goodbye. She swallowed down her thoughts and the lump in her throat and snapped back to the present. "And thank you for the offer.. It'd be interesting to be part of a pack again" she added, with a respecting bow of the head, and lowering of her tail.

I watched Zach fly away with a mixture of a lot of "good riddance", and a little sorrow for Kirra. Then I turned to her just as she said, I guess that's that then. I gave a symphathetic whine as she angled her ears slightly back. I nodded after she told me, And thank you for the offer.. It'd be interesting to be part of a pack again. I flicked one ear back and forth once while I said, There's no rush. But I'll have to go check on my other pack members while you make up your mind. Then I added with some sorrow in my eyes, I'm sorry I don't have time to fish with you.
